We stand the aisle surveying the massive number of products, e.g., cereal, vegetables, meat and so on. We may be looking for a specific type of a specific brand, say, Dawn liquid dish detergent. The manufacturer can make this easier to find if they package it in a different style container. This will make it stand out. If other manufacturers start using the same or a similar shape, the consumer is once again stuck trying to find it. In the fist case, something has been done to make the target object stand out. In the second case, something has been done and that becomes a distracter. With distracters the task becomes more difficult. Sternberg (2009) suggests that people conduct a feature search. This means they begin to look for certain features that are associated with the item or even person. Even this can lead to failure in finding the object or person when there are many that are similar. At this point, a conjunction search could be used. This means that a person would look for specific combinations. The Stroop Effect experiment makes it clear how distracters can result in failure to see what one is searching for (Francis, Neath and VanHorn, 2008). The subject is looking for specific colors but the experiment presents the names of colors but in a different color, e.g., the word green is presented in the color blue (Francis, Neath and VanHorn, 2008). The Stroop Effect theory states that people will be slower to respond when presented with conflicting information (Francis, Neath and VanHorn, 2008).
