A 4 page research paper/essay that analyzes Mel Gibson’s film “The Passion of the Christ” has an air of authenticity that is designed to enhance the illusion that the audience is watching a highly accurate dramatization of biblical accounts of Christ’s Passion. The writer argues that a close examination of the film reveals that there are numerous deviations from the gospel accounts. These deviations, while still in keeping, overall, with the biblical text, tend to promote a theological perspective on the Bible that is in keeping with traditional Catholicism. gospel accounts is the fact that Mary is the most prevalent character portrayed in the film, with the sole exception of the portrayal of Jesus himself. As John 19:25 states,
Mary was present at the crucifixion, but there is no mention of her in the Bible in regards to Christs Passion narrative otherwise. Gibson takes considerable artistic license with her
role that gives the film a theological perspective that derives from his Catholic faith. For example, when Jesus prays during his trek from Jerusalem to Golgatha, he describes himself as
"the Son of Your handmaid" (Longhenry, 2004). Additionally, John and Peter address Mary as "mother" numerous times during the film prior to the moment when Jesus gives John this injunction
from the cross (Longhenry, 2004). Another deviation consists of the scenes that feature the wife of Pilate, who also has an expanded role. Matthew 29:19 mentions Pilates wife, who
