The paralegals job is often not as high a level as a lawyer, but some independent paralegals do take on cases and give legal advice. Generally, people with small cases such as those that go to small claims court may want to hire a paralegal to avoid a large legal bill, but it is important for consumers to understand the difference between the two professionals. Many people have heard the word paralegal and wonder how the profession may be considered as compared with full fledged lawyers. First, it should be noted that a paralegal is not a lawyer but he or she can still assist people in legal areas where an attorney is not needed ("Help! I Need a Lawyer," 2009). There are many circumstances that such a situation might occur. For instance, someone may not require a lawyer to close a real estate deal or to get into a contract, but sometimes, legal advice can be very helpful. Some common reason for retaining a paralegal is when someone has a case in small claims court or is appearing in front of an insurance board or the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal for example ("Help! I Need a Lawyer," 2009). When someone is charged with a minor criminal act, a paralegal can be helpful ("Help! I Need a Lawyer," 2009).
