Paracelsus, (1493-1541) whose real name was Theophrastus Phillippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim, was an amazing person born in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. He was considered to be yet another of many to break through the medieval times into modernity. His peers included such luminaries as Leonardo Da Vinci, Martin Luther, and Nicholas Copernicus. At times it was the scientific findings of Paracelsus that were more the subject of talk than the findings of these other men. It was his medicinal and chemistry findings that brought him his fame in the first place (Debus 2000). CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHEMISTRY It was the works of Isaac Hollandus that first interested him in alchemy to a great degree, having already tested the waters in that subject after being introduced to it by his father. Manly Hall called him "the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics and the most original medical thinker of the sixteenth century" (Paracelsus, 2002, PG). Paracelsus himself wrote an amazing book entitled The Coelum Philosophorum: The Science And Nature Of Alchemy, And What Opinion Should Be Formed Thereof in which he writes such comments as "For example, the mountain, the sand, the earth or the stone in which a metal has grown is such a concealment. Each one of the visible metals is a concealment of the other six metals" (The Coelum Philosophorum, 2002, PG). His is not an easy text to understand and in it he makes use of several of the planets involved with the metals and the body. "That body is the spirit of heaven.
