regardless of national boundaries, one can learn a great deal about a person by the way in which they choose to play and interact with others during periods of play. This is part of the power and usefulness of therapies that use play as their main vehicle of choice. Anna Freud was one of the first early pioneers in the use of play in therapy. It was thought that play could be an adequate substitute for revealing subconscious desires much like the free association exercises that adults are asked to participate in while going through psychoanalysis(**). Mary Ahns article: Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship illustrates that there are several main traditions of play therapy, each one differing slightly one from the other. However, all of the experts seem to agree that it is the essence of play to communicate a childs sublimated experiences, thoughts and underlying emotions. The humanistic tradition, or model, is the more prevalent model in the United States. This article goes on to suggest that an almost humanist model of play therapy is what is used. This is a type of therapy that is patient centered, or in this case, child centered. The therapist does not direct the session at all, but simply asks questions that stimulate communication between the child and the facilitator. This model was developed first by Carl Rogers in the early forties and can be seen as a direct rebellion against the very doctor centered therapies of the day and age.
