and his Venetian officer, Iago. These very different men have bonded on the battlefield and had become close confidants off. However, there was always brewing within these soldiers a competitive rivalry that could be easily fueled by envy or jealousy. Ego is the primary motivating force of these macho warriors and while they would watch each others backs when engaged in combat, they would more often than not resort to sticking knives in them if one felt threatened in some way by the other. Author Harold Bloom observed in his literary criticism of Othello, "The mens sense of identity and worth is dependent... on their bonds with other men who guarantee their honor and reputation" (89). Furthermore, Bloom asserted, because of their competitive natures, "All the men are jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel. Iagos success derives largely from his ability to manipulate male rivalries, verifying his friendship with each man by shared contempt toward another. In this way, he feeds the mens need for self-esteem, insures their bond with him, and exacerbates their potential rivalries with each other" (90). There can be little doubt that Iago always harbored a "primal envy" against Othello (Bloom 2). After all, he was a native of Venice, and therefore felt he should be his citys chief defender. However, he lacked the military prowess of Othello, who was a strategist without peer. Although he would always be a bit of an outsider, his role as army commander earned him the respect of the citizens, even if not complete acceptance into their society.
