that the action of the play hinges on Shakespeares characterization of Othello. In Act I, Scene 3, Shakespeare presents Othello while he is defending himself on charges bought
against him by Desdemonas father Brabantio, who cannot believe that his daughter married the Moor of her own free will. The speech that Othello makes before the Duke
of Venice is highly revealing of his character. This characterization is vital to the internal logic of the play because the tragic nature of the story hinges on
the audience being aware of the upstanding nature of each both Othello and Desdemona. In relating his life story, Othello establishes that he is noble, descended from African royalty. Furthermore,
Othellos simple recitation of his life experiences shows that he has endured and triumphed over considerable adversity. He has lived in soldiers camps and engaged in the arts of war
since he was seven. All he knows is "broils and battles," but he has traveled extensively in mysterious regions, met with "cannibals" and the "Anthropophagi." Captured by enemies, he
endured slavery, it is clear that Othello suffered and accomplished a great deal as he is known as a respected general. Othello speaks so eloquently, with such frankness and
