This is no longer the case. Democracy has been equated with free trade and for the last hundred years, any corporation that found itself in trouble with labor used the democracy defense. Political leaders have adopted the opinion and attitude there is something divine about markets, hence Franks book title. Democracy, culture and politics have become corporatized, according to Frank. What this means is that it is the corporate multi-millionaires who form policy, who drive the economy, and who represent the culture. There are no opponents, even the media supports this concept, which is no surprise since most of the media outlets are owned by about a dozen corporations. The perceptions of the American public have been seriously distorted by the corporate millionaires who can change policy and politics. The dot.coms are in great part responsible for the changes. These young people shed the suits and adopted street-wise jargon, flaunting their millions and using those millions to change the cultural fabric of America. They changed the perceptions of Americans in terms of what the culture should be. Americans, in general, may have hailed the Horatio Alger type of self-made millionaire because these individuals were able to exploit the technology before they crashed and burned but Americans were na?ve to the very dramatic changes in politics, the economy and the changes in the cultural fabric of this nation.
