Whole Foods Market offers approximately 2,200 items in four lines of private-label products, through approximately 300 stores in the United States, Canada and the UK (Biesada, 2011). John Mackey launched Whole Foods in 1978 as SaferWay Natural Foods in Austin, with help from a $10,000 loan from his father (Biesada, 2011). Mackeys concept was that of a supermarket-size, large, natural food store, unlike the health food stores of the time, which were small, dark and typically smelled funny. In 1980, SaferWay merged with Clarksville Natural Grocery and the Whole Foods Market brand was created (Biesada, 2011). That same year, the company opened an 11,000 square-foot supermarket in Austin, and added a second store 18 months later in a suburb of Austin (Biesada, 2011). From that point on, expansion took place throughout Texas, then into Louisiana, California and North Carolina (Biesada, 2011). In expanding, Mackay and his crew stuck close to university towns, believing that younger people would be more interested in environmentally friendly, organic, pesticide-free products. Whole Foods went public in 1992, and continued expanding both organically and through acquisitions (Biesada, 2011). Its most recent acquisition was that of the Wild Oats chain, over which there was some controversy (Biesada, 2011). However, the acquisition was finalized in 2007 (Biesada, 2011).
