Theyd have to be; if every single medical decision was kicked up the line to a CEO (ala the show Scrubs), nothing would every get done. But in some cases, the health care organizations do end up in a hierarchical structure. Health care organizations in the military, overseen by the Department of Defense, are in this scenario. In this paper, well examine the Brooke Army Medical Center and its burn unit; a huge institution on the edge of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. The organizational design and behavior of this particular institution is interesting, as it blends the relatively flat structure of the standard hospital with the more rigid, hierarchical design of the military. Defining Organizational Design/Structure Before discussing a specific organizational structure for Brooke Army Medical, it would first be helpful to determine what, exactly, organizational design encompasses. In its most basic terminology, organization design can be defined as "a formal, guided process for integrating the people, information and technology of an organization" (Autrey, 1996).
