2002). Low level protocols are able to define the electrical and physical standards to be observed, and this is done in respect to the bit- and byte-ordering as well as the transmission and error detection and correction of the bit stream (2002). High level protocols are related to the data formatting, something that includes the syntax of messages, the terminal to computer dialogue, sequencing of messages and character sets (2002). The rules utilized are merely ones that allow different computers to communicate with one another (Morse, 1996). Protocols actually describe how packets of information are sent from one computer to another and are how they are broken down for the trip and how they are able to be reassembled at the receiving end (Morse, 1996). TCP/IP is one example of a protocol. It is the one international language that is spoken by computers on the Internet (1996). Morse compares protocols in respect to the computer with how people drive cars (1996). This analogy helps people to understand what the protocol really is, which is that there are rules to follow in life and that computers must follow rules too. That is a rather simplistic explanation. Still, it is rather amazing to imagine how the computer works in the first place. There are so many intricacies that make the computers run. Morse (1996) explains that if people did not follow protocols when driving their cars, they would collide. Just as people must follow the rules of the road, computers must follow protocols so that information is appropriately transferred. The following is an explanation of a variety of protocols that are commonly used in a networking situation: Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) The protocol suite for ARP is TCP/IP, and it is actually a network layer address ...
