Native Americans have played tremendously important roles in American history since the inception of our country. During World
War II one of these roles placed certain Native American individuals in critical positions sending and deciphering messages over military radios. Although the Navajo Code talkers only recently came into
most Americans perception with the release of the popular movie on the topic, they were a critical component of our ability to triumph in the Pacific arena during the war.
The now-infamous Navajo code was based on the Navajo language itself, a language that is linquistically distinct from any other language
being spoken in the world. Prior to World War II, it did not exist in a written form and only about thirty non-Navajo spoke Navajo (Molnar, 2006). Molnar
(2006) observes: "Its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, make it unintelligible to
anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols" Philip Johnston, a
member of a missionary family that had been raised on the Navajo reservation, realized that those facts made the Navajo language a perfect option for use in cryptographic operations.
Johnston has served in World War I and realized the importance the Choctaw language had played in that war. Johnsons proposal that the Navajo language be utilized as a
