Nonverbal Communication Clothing Little (2001) discusses the messages attached to clothing during the Pequot War of 1636-37, titling her work, "Shoot that rogue, for he hath an Englishmans coat on!" Western dress was adopted by most groups long ago, but traditional dress still retains the communication keys of the earlier era. Clothing was used as "an indicator of rank, status, age and gender" (Little, 2001; p. 238) for hundreds - and probably thousands - of years. Clothing carries particular significance in ceremonial activities. A wedding dress in a Plains group might be particularly fine leather, particularly if the bride were a member of the ruling family. Sexsmith (2003) describes the original dress of the jingle dress dance, or rather reports the account of a long-time jingle dress dancer of what the dress should be. Evelyn Thom, born in 1927, provides a view of the traditional jingle dress dance. "We went to the round dance hall and the ladies danced in a circle or a line in the old traditional style, straightforward dancing, no kicks, and no high steps. We were not supposed to pass each other" (Sexsmith, 2003; p. 28).
