Examining this statement and analyzing the authors argument pertaining to ethnic war and nationalism, the student gains a significantly better understanding of why nationalism is not necessarily the positive force many believe it to be. Ignatieff indicates that cultural differences are at the core of nationalism as it exists throughout the world. According to the author, economic change must have cultural conformity in order to exist; in turn, the desire for such conformity is what ultimately encourages nationalism. However, all too often what also comes with the concept of nationalism and cultural conformity is the requirement of just one culture. This is where conflict begins, when people are not permitted to follow their own cultural beliefs in the name of nationalism. Ignatieff explains that states often impose nationalistic idioms upon their people, which is the cause of much struggle and strife. However, the author claims that to be without such an idiom would represent the absence of a respectable life. The key, he contends, is to possess the right idiom, for the wrong one only serves to perpetuate humiliation and the threat of being a cast out of ones own society. Ignatieff addresses the various concepts of nationalism as they relate to a global context by noting that throughout history, people have fought to uphold their personal sense of culture in the face of nationalism. It has been a difficult fight and one that not many have actually won, yet they continue to wage war against nationalistic tendencies to seek out cultural conformity in the name of a better and more productive state.
