a courtship situation the non-verbal cues can be quite prolific, especially where women are concerned. How does one attract the attention of the opposite sex? Besides the obvious jumping up and down scenario, most experts state that non-verbal communication often is the way in which members of the opposite sex manage to attract attention toward themselves, accenting their more attractive characteristics and downplaying or camouflaging the less attractive. Women are more often than not the one to initiate conversation, but before words are spoken will often go through a series of non-verbal cues. Certain cues such as making and maintaining eye contact are key components to this attraction and attention getting phase. Another non-verbal cue would be the synchronization of body postures. If the couple are beginning to click and there is chemistry one can begin to observe that both people begin to assume the positions of the other with their bodies. In other words, if one person leans forward, indicating interest, then the other will too. If one person crosses their legs, the other may in some way cross his legs. Robert Hinde created a study which resulted in a cataloging of various courtship signals that women use. In other words, when flirting, the female of the species utilize many of the same techniques. Flipping of the hair is one signal, while asking for aid or help is another. What these indicate to the prospective mate is that the female is interested, finds him attractive and capable of taking care of her. Smiling and laughing are often other indicators of non-verbal communication.
