Sonata in C Major (K.309), to be part of a trio of works that were published as "Opus IV" around 1782, but were composed on a trip that Mozart took with his mother to Mannheim and Paris which occurred between September 1777 and January 1779 (Irving 62). Mozarts keyboard sonatas typically have three movements: "a fast opener, a slower middle one, and a fast finale"; however, within this basic formula, Mozart incorporated his amazing versatility and incredible musical imagination (Kuster 168). The following examination focuses on the stylistic features that Mozart used in the A minor Sonata and the D major, also including relevant information that conveys aspects of interpretation. Background Joseph Machlis comments that there is "Something of the miraculous" in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), as for that one moment in music history, "all opposites were reconciled, all tensions resolved" and "that luminous moment was Mozart" (Machlis 205). Born in Salzburg, his father, Leopold Mozart, was an "esteemed composer-violinist" employed at the court of the Archbishop (Machlis 206). A prodigy, he started composing before he was five-year-old and was concretizing by the time he was six, as this was his age when he performed before the Empress Maria Theresa (Machlis 206). His father then took him on a tour of Europe and, as a boy, Mozart gave concerts in all the major cities of Europe (Machlis 206). By the time he was thirteen, he had composed "sonatas, concertos, symphonies and religious works," as well as an "opera buffa" and the operetta "Bastien and Bastienne" (Machlis 206).
