Motor skills are determined by a complexity of cognitive processes. Specific parts of the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord, determine our ability to perform certain movements. Motor neurons, those neurons that are specifically responsible for the various motor skills, connect the brain with the various muscles that effect a particular movement. The total activity of the motor neuron pool, that collection of all the motor neurons that innervate a single muscle, controls the degree of muscle contraction. Upper motor neurons are those neurons which lie within the gray matter of the spinal cord and which send information outside the spinal cord via the axons of the sensory neurons. Sometimes there are intermediary neurons called interneurons which serve as a bridge between the upper motor neuron and the sensory neurons. These intermediary lower neurons pass the information on to the muscles and glands of the body from the upper neurons to the sensory neurons. Lower motor neurons control reflex movement, also referred to as the final common pathway, the key parts of which include the motor components of the reflex arc. Neurons are also classified in two additional ways: by the direction in which they conduct their impulses and by the number of processes they have. Motor neurons are efferent neurons, they pass information out of the central nervous system while afferent neurons, or sensory neurons, pass information from the periphery into the central nervous system (Anthony and Thibodeau, 1983). Interneurons conduct information from the afferent neurons to the motor neurons (Anthony and Thibodeau, 1983). ...
