analysis of "Am. Slavery, Am. Freedom" ? August, 2000 ? properly! Colonial Virginia was the largest and most influential of the original thirteen American colonies. George Washington, a Virginian, led the American army to victory in the Revolution and was the first president of the new republic. Thomas Jefferson, another Virginian, wrote the Declaration of Independence and was also one of the countrys first presidents. As a matter of fact, Virginians were elected to the presidency for thirty-two years out of the countrys first thirty-six years of existence. But what is even more remarkable is that all of these men?who served the country so eloquently and devotedly in defense of freedom?were all slaveholders. At the time of the American Revolution, Virginians owned 40 percent of all the slaves in the new United States of America. This simultaneous development of slavery and freedom represents the central paradox of early American history. The key to comprehending how this happened can be found in Edmund S. Morgans history of colonial Virginia, American Slavery, American Freedom. A Sterling Professor of American History at Yale University and a past president of the Organization of Americans Historians, Morgan offers a comprehensive and thorough examination of colonial Virginia that reveals the dynamics that led to this defining characteristic of early America. Morgan begins his book by discussing the role that slavery played in the economics of early America.
