grateful because one Sunday night as Assencao happened to be driving by, he noticed three armed men were pointing guns at store employees (Gallagher 21). A New York Post report on the incident disclosed that Assencao immediately pulled his vehicle over, notified local law enforcement authorities, and then observed one of the armed men throw one of the clerks to the ground (Gallagher 21). The quick-thinking former police officer pulled his gun and wounded one of the thugs in the stomach while the two other criminals fled the scene without firing a shot. What could have been a robbery with fatal consequences was immediately subdued when a law-abiding citizen carrying a gun and trained extensively on how to use it intervened. Other stories, however, do not have such happy endings as in the famous 1980s case of liberal Colorado radio talk show Alan Berg was murdered in his driveway when members of The Order Aryan group shot him thirteen times (Gallagher 21). Bergs execution took place after his request for a gun permit had been denied (Gallagher 21). In a similar but lesser known case from the mid-1990s, an 83-year-old Baltimore man named James Edward Scott wounded an intruder attempting to break into his row home (Gallagher 21). Police promptly removed the .22 rifle from Scotts possession, and within a year the elderly gentleman was strangled to death in another break-in without the gun protection that likely would have saved his life (Gallagher 21). These examples and many others all point to the same conclusion: The more guns there are in the hands of law-abiding citizens that use them solely for their own protection, the less crime there is as a result.
