It is said that good parenting goes to directing adolescents to make good choices, but it also means that parents or guardians are stricter when it comes to certain issues that will affect the rest of the young persons life. For example, if a teenager wants to get a tattoo or a piercing, it is best to allow a piercing as opposed to a tattoo. Why? The piercing is temporary as the hole can close up if need be, but that tattoo is permanent. While tattoos can be removed, that is a costly process and scarring will result. The piercing versus tattoo example is just one illustration as it respects the need for parents and other role models to be cognizant of important issues. Whether a teen dyes his or her hair red, black or purple does not matter. The teen is expressing his own individuality and that is something that should be ignored. However, when a teen wants to do something that can permanently damage or change their lives forever, those are important issues. Therefore, issues that go to drug abuse, sex and driving are topics that are relevant. Drugs and drinking can lead to problems where the adolescent drops out of society or gets into a car accident. They may be on the road to addiction, which can be life changing and even end in death. Similarly, sex can result in AIDS or an unplanned pregnancy, and driving if not performed correctly can lead to accidents. While fender benders can be a learning experience, some accidents do lead to serious injury, and may even be sustained for the rest of their lives.
