shows that certain parallels can be drawn between their styles that justifies their inclusion in the same general artistic category. Principally -- in both cases -- the construction of
their work creates a specific "impression" in the mind of the viewer/listener. This objective is obtained by subtly altering standards in their respective arts that previously had been considered immutable.
For example, in Monets "Garden at Sainte-Adresse" the entire scene is as if it were slightly out of focus. Previously in painting, artists endeavored to present work that was
as realistic as possible. There is a famous story of an early Renaissance painter, who as a novice, once painted a fly so realistically that his master tried to brush
it from the canvas. Nothing in Monets painting mirrors life to this degree. Rather, everything is slightly blurred, merely giving the viewer the "impression" of the object rather than representing
that object fully. Nevertheless, by rendering the scene in this manner, Monet perfectly captures and communicates the beauty of the scene to the viewer. It is as if
the impressionistic style somehow captures the emotional of the artist even better than a naturalistic rendering of the same scene. There is a sense of serenity to the people calmly
observing the ships that crowd the harbor. Their serenity provides an interesting contrast to the business of the ships, and the choppy water that suggests wind and motion. Starting
from the top of the picture, the eye is caught by the colors of the two flags, fluttering in the wind against the blue sky. Clouds provide a white
