Summary Carl Gustav Young is one of the most recognizable names of history. He is remembered as the founder of analytical psychology. "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" is largely composed of a series of lectures Jung delivered prior to 1935. The book includes chapters on dream analysis, psychotherapy, analytical psychology, the psychological theory of types, and the stages of life. Jung elaborates on such concepts as the doctor-patient relationship as well as broader topics such as sociological issues. Jung believed that each individual had a specific personality type. His broad classifications included introverted personality types and extroverted personality types. He developed the idea of individuation, a life-long quest for the integration of the conscious and unconscious self which is necessary to achieve wholeness. One additional credit among a long list of accomplishments is Jungs origination of the idea of the collective unconsciousness, the belief that certain psychic structures are shared by all mankind and has shaped the course of human existence. This book is particularly interesting in that it clarifies distinctions between Freud and Jung and delves into what Jung perceives as being the spiritual problems of modern man. We must keep in mind, of course, that Jungs reference to "modern" is dated to say the least. Never-the-less, many of the theories outlined in "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" remain applicable even today.
