The first technique that was applied to Patient As plight was to teach her to strategies for deep relaxation. She was very open to these strategies and soon learned how to go into a state of relaxation. The clinician discussed with her how to recognize the signs of tension and stress and begin practicing relaxation techniques at such times. Patient A reports that learning to control her migraine headaches was a gradually process, but that gradually, she found that by relaxing she could usually ward off a migraine, or at least make it less severe and of shorter duration. As Dr. Miller points out "Deep healing depends not just on deep relaxation, but on consciously holding within your mind images of ideal health for every part of your body" (Miller, 1997, p. 162). As Patient A assimilated this principal, she reports that she experienced a profound sense of control and now only has an occasional migraines, which occurs when she forgets to take the time to meditate, distress, and relax. B. Two case histories of conventional treatment Patient B became severely depressed when her last child moved out of the family home. Anti-depressants alleviated her condition somewhat, but made her feel groggy and detached from reality.
