(Ginn, 2007). Piaget is referred to as both an interactionist and a constructivist, which means his theory can fit into both classifications (Ginn, 2007). Piaget proposed four stages of cognitive development to explain how children learn and develop. He believed these stages were sequential and invariant, which means that every person must accomplish each stage in sequence, you cannot skip from preoperational to formal operational, for instance (Ginn, 2007). There is some flexibility in the ages at which each stage occurs (Ginn, 2007). A brief description of these four states follows: 1. Sensorimotor stage (birth - 2 years old). Child differentiates self from objects, recognizes self as an agent of actions and begins to interact intentionally with others and objects (Child Development Institute, 2006). 2. Preoperational stage (ages 2-7). The child is not yet able to conceptualize abstractly and needs concrete physical situations. Learns to use language (Child Development Institute, 2006). 3. Concrete operations (ages 7-11). As physical experience accumulates, the child starts to conceptualize, creating logical structures that explain his or her physical experiences. Abstract problem solving is also possible at this stage (Child Development Institute, 2006). 4. Formal operations (beginning at ages 11-15). Is capable of conceptual reasoning and is able to think logically about abstract propositions (Child Development Institute, 2006). Piaget also noted three fundamental processes that were involved in intellectual growth, assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration (Ginn, 2007). Assimilation has to do with the ability to incorporate new information, experience and events into ones existing cognitive structures; accommodation has to do with changing the existing cognitive structures to accommodate new information and experiences (Ginn, 2007). Equilibrium is then about gaining a balance between the learner and the environment and between assimilation and accommodation (Ginn, 2007).
