This poem by John Boyle OReilly could have well been written Irish revolutionary leader, Michael Collins, describing the real man versus the public perception, offered in the 1996 film, directed and scripted by fellow Irishman Neil Jordan. Before the films wide release, most Americans had never even heard of Michael Collins, but it was this devout nationalist who forever changed the political landscape of Ireland. Depending on whose information you choose to believe, Collins was either a patriotic savior or an early twentieth-century terrorist, the likes of a modern-day Saddam Hussein. Unfortunately, because of his martyred assassination in 1922, much of what has come to represent Michael Collins is more fiction than fact. Jordans ambitious film, which had taken 13 years to reach the screen, was an attempt to explore the complexities of the man behind the myth, as well as provide Collins with the international recognition that had largely eluded him beyond the boundaries of Eire. While Jordans film begins amidst the political turmoil of Ireland in 1916, with Jordan at the center of the impending storm, his life had begun 26 years earlier, on October 16, 1890, in the small farming community of County Cork, Ireland (Miss 33).
