least, it does contribute to the global economy. Mexico however is in a unique position because of its relationship with the United States. The United States is the leading world power today and Mexico, because of its proximity, trades with the United States and is in fact part of a trade agreement called NAFTA. The North American Free Trade Agreement has been in effect for some time, but had been fraught with controversy since its inception. It should be noted that in addition to NAFTA, Mexico is in a total of 12 agreements with 40 other countries ("Mexico: CIA"). Yet, NAFTA is the one that is most commonly referenced when discussing Mexico. Has NAFTA been successful? Mostly, U.S. laborers had been afraid that NAFTA would take their jobs and others had environmental concerns. While it is true that the 1990s saw economic improvements, NAFTA seems not to have been very effective in enforcing environmental regulations. In terms of environmental issues, NAFTA is seemingly ineffective. However, NAFTA has to some extent created more jobs for the people in Mexico and in that way, it is seemingly effective. NAFTA seems to have helped the weak economy of Mexico, at least to an extent. As far as its effect on American business, that is not certain. There are advantages and disadvantages of regional integration. NAFTA does appear to have been good for Mexico, but the jury is still out on that one. Time will tell if NAFTA is really all that effective or Mexicos smaller successes are attributable to other factors.
