Both Saadawis Memoirs of a female physician and Ogots The Rain Came present a perspective on the role of women within an oppressive society, and the difficulties which such women have in breaking free from the social and cultural codes which constrain them. Although the two works are set in different cultures, and have many differences in their structure, many of the points which they elucidate regarding the role of women in a patriarchal society are similar. In Memoirs of a female physician, the central character is a woman growing up in a strict Islamic society, being forced to conform to social and religious dictates when prevent her from fulfilling herself as a person. She is, for example, forbidden to cut her hair, and the desire to have short hair (or at least, the freedom to choose for herself how she treats her own body) as her brothers do, comes to symbolise the more general longing for freedom which she has. When eventually she does cut her hair, symbolically breaking the chains which bind her to her culture and the negative and oppressive aspects of her religion, she is condemned even by her own mother. Throughout the narrative, we see the many different ways in which cultural ideologies suppress and stifle women, and the difficulties which even strong women have in transcending their culture. The physician is determined and tenacious, but even she finds herself coming up against the whole weight of tradition and religious dogma in her society. Her life has been planned out for her, ...
