This unprecedented wave of culture took firm root in Florence, which proved to supersede anything going on anywhere else in Europe at the time. The Medici court saw its greatest hold upon the city in the middle of the fifteenth century when it "came to dominate all aspects of civic life" (Van Helden, 1995).
