expected to abide by patriarchal control. It was with Medea that Euripides broke the common literary mold by having his heroine enact dreadful and premeditated revenge in such a
bold manner. One of the most prominent literary motifs of mythology is that of gender, power and the tragic hero. When determining
who truly exercises power in archaic society, one first must study ancient society and what was important in such an existence, which serves to illustrate the exact opposite nature of
Jasons weakness as a man. Indeed, it can readily be argued that patriarchy ruled ancient society, inasmuch as the ancestral ties associated with the male gender were as strong
as steel. However, not all men were deemed acceptable to adopt a position of power, a concept that is readily apparent within the literary boundaries of Medea with Jasons
