these is "Productive Thinking", by Max Wertheimer. This is a book that has been out of print for some time, yet is still commonly found cited in many other respected works (Sternberg and Davidson, 1995). In many ways books such as these form the Gestalt psychologists, of which Max Wertheimer was a founder, can be seen as foreshadowing the "cognitive revolution" (Sternberg and Davidson, 1995). When looking at the book we also need to remember that this can be seen as forming the foundations to the many later studies. The book was not published until two years after his death, and as a result can be seen as the last work he was to write. The main context of the book is summarised in the title, the book considers the way in which we conceive and consider things and how the formations of thought take place. The questions that the author posses are those that ask what it is that happens when an individual thinks, why and how this happens, what causes and how it occurs and then continues and what is occurring when the process continues. The way that Wertheimer would deal with this would be to consider the process against the context in which it happened. He claimed that the characteristics of productive thinking were determined by this context, and how it is applied to a situation. To class a thought process as productive thinking there is a need for a transition to take place, this would mean moving from a personal sate of confusion, where there is little understanding and reasons regarding a situation, and to which the thinker is blind to the core fundamental structures of the issues considered.
