business success. According to Manz, Bastien and Hostager (1991) there are roughly a hundred working definitions of "leadership" that are currently accepted within the academic community. To add to this confusion, what one author says about leadership frequently contradicts what another authors advocates. One of the clearest and most insightful books on business leadership, and to this day one of the most topical, was written by Max DePree in 1989 and entitled Leadership is an Art. Examination of DePrees landmark book and his leadership philosophy shows that his insight and example exemplify the paradigms described by many current-day authors, particularly in regards to those who endorse the concepts of transformational and motivational leadership. Transformational leaders "move employees beyond self-interest to concern for the overall organization" (Weiss, 2003, p. 17). Research concerning transformational leadership shows that leaders who exhibit behaviors such as "intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, inspirational motivation and idealized influence" achieve greater results in employee performance and satisfaction and in overall organizational effectiveness (Barbuto and Burbach, 2006, p. 51). These descriptions perfect express the business philosophy of Max DePree who believes that leadership concerns the liberating people to do what is required of them and to do this in a manner that is both effective and humane (Budman, 2002). DePree adopted a model of leadership that pictures the leader as both inspiring and serving (Budman, 2002). Such a framework for leadership implies that there are open line of communication between management and employees and this is precisely what exists at DePrees company, Herman Miler, Inc., an office furniture manufacturer.
