In so many ways she epitomizes what teaching is all about, and what the teacher is all about as well. Her story is one of struggle, and determination, illustrating to all adults in her time, and today as well, that education and striving for better things is not beyond ones reach. She inspired African Americans to do more with their lives and their minds, and also inspired the field of adult education, again showing adults that education was not just for children. The following paper examines what made Mary M. Bethune so amazing in relationship to her contribution to adult education. Mary M. Bethunes Contribution to Adult Education From an early age Mary was in love with education. She remembered teachers fondly and was always eager to learn. One author notes, "Bethunes parents saw something special in the little girl...and were determined that she accept an offer from a Quaker woman to attend school" (Hamilton, 2004; 12). She then went on to receive two scholarships at the end of the 19th century (Hamilton, 2004; 12). She received a scholarship from Scotia Seminary near Concord, N.C.,--now known as Barber-Scotia College. After graduating in 1894, she was awarded a second scholarship to an institution for the training of missionaries, Dwight Moodys Institute for Home and Foreign Missions in Chicago. She understood, as she grew, that many African American children were likely just as she had been; eager and desiring to know things. While struggling herself, she recognized a need to teach her fellow people, adults, the basic education skills.
