struggled, and spoke, for equality of people, although they were from very different time periods and thus they came from different personal history in terms of experience. But, at the same time they held many ideals, and approaches to those ideals, that were the same. The following paper compares and contrasts the two men. Martin Luther King Jr. and Frederick Douglass Martin Luther King Jr. was a man, born in 1929, who first became involved in religion and being a preacher. This is largely perhaps because his father was a preacher as well. But, as he developed his spiritual nature he became further educated as well and began to seriously see the need for changing his society and thereby became involved in Civil Rights while also always remaining a minister of his people. One author notes: "As pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, King lead a black bus boycott. He and ninety others were arrested and indicted under the provisions of a law making it illegal to conspire to obstruct the operation of a business. King and several others were found guilty, but appealed their case. A Supreme Court decision in 1956 ended Alabamas segregation laws enacted by Democrats. After this success, King was made president of the newly established Southern Christian Leadership Conference" (The Black Republican Magazine, 2008). He then led a march on Washington wherein he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech, which will be examined further along in this essay. He was an icon, as well as a very powerful voice of non-violence in his approach to change. However, he was assassinated and his active voice was silenced, although his dream and legacy continue.
