We emptied the bags onto a great pile, and as the last bag was dumped, the pile exploded into a fire so bright that it lit up the whole world. There,emblazoned across the sky, were the words: EVERY GOOD THING STARTS WITH A DREAM." This book, supposedly for ages four through eight, simply states one of King's greatest contributions: the ability to dream or envision how things should be. After a major march on Washington, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. It was not the first law of civil rights for Americans, but it was the most thorough and effective. The act guaranteed equal rights in housing, public facilities, voting, and public schools. Vision. According to Baldwin (1992), by focusing on community, King gave the United States a vision of a society not fragmented by race, sex, class, religion, nationality or other means of classification. Although inspired by other oppressed peoples of the world, Balwin (1992) also reflects Kings beliefs that all peoples, throughout the world, should expose the wrongs of their oppressors through nonviolent means. The method of passive resistance is contributed to his studies of Gandhi and Thoreau. Miller (1992) depicts the influences of cultural traditions within the black folk pulpit as having an undeniable importance on King.
