In Great Britain would make a move which would shock the western world. She would announce a relaxation of her marijuana laws, a relaxation which would mean that most police interactions with those illegally possessing the drug would result in warnings and drug confiscations rather than formal charges (CBS News, 2002). The intent of this relaxation is stated as being the freeing up of police resources so that a harder stance can be taken on more serious drugs (CBS News, 2002). While the penalties for users of marijuana were relaxed considerably, however, the penalties for dealing marijuana were raised to five to fourteen years (CBS News, 2002). British officials contend that their intention is to still emphasize the potential dangers of marijuana while at the same time quantifying those dangers as somewhat less than drugs such as heroine and Ecstasy (CBS News, 2002). Great Britains move, a move which despite officials assertions to the contrary, is believed by some to be geared toward the eventual legalization of marijuana (CBS News, 2002). British changes in the way they officially deal with marijuana is just one step in a long history of the manner in which marijuana is perceived and regulated throughout the world. While western countries such as Great Britain and Canada are loosening their marijuana policies, they do so within the context of a complex history and in the fact of stern disapproval from countries like the United States.
