While the conscious mind sleeps, the unconscious is awake playing for the mind odd bits of truth and falsehood, of dream and reality. It is up to the person to discover what is real and what is fantasy. This can be a mental exercise done for ones amusement or it can be the only key to unlocking a mystery. In Margaret Atwoods latest novel, Alias Grace, the latter applies. Through dreams of the accused and her Doctor the reader is given clues as to the innocence or guilt of Grace Marks. In the middle 1800s this celebrated murderess imprisoned in a Canadian insane asylum for complicity in the murder of her employer and his mistress. Sent to the asylum is Dr. Simon Jordan a doctor of the new and burgeoning field of mind study. His interest in Grace is academic. She cannot remember the events of the murder of which she allegedly participated. Through tracing her past and later examining her dreams, he hopes to uncover what really happened on that fateful day. Atwood uses dreams to give clues as to what is going on in the mind and the past of the person having it. She convincingly creates a context for dream study. Although the novel takes place in the 1840s predating Freud and Jung. Dr. Jordan wants to know what causes a person to go from being sane to insane. "What is the bridge? Nerves/Brain fevers, trances?
