What makes cultural identity so important, however, is that certain aspects of it are internally defined by the individual in question, while others are externally defined by the way society viewed that individual. When thought of in this way, the importance of cultural identity at the organizational level becomes all too apparent. Public relations is a critical part of any organization, but public relations cant control how an organization is viewed in the cultural context. At most, it can work to mitigate or diminish negative impressions. A direct initiative pointed at the establishment of a well-defined organizational culture is thus essential for any organization that doesnt want to leave its public conception entire up to external considerations. There are key reasons why cultural identity is important to organizations as well as individuals. Organizations absolutely require a purposively constructed cultural identity in order to efficiently carry out operations towards distinct goals. It works like this. Organizational culture is the foundation from which all process-related and managerial decisions can be made, because culture always dictates the best path towards an organizations long term goal and values. For instance, if an organizations culture emphasized providing low prices to customers at any cost, it would not adopt processes that contradicted that cultural value, or else they would never reach their long term goal of having the lowest prices. This is a simplistic example, but an instructive one. Theorist Daphne Jameson (2007, p. 218) identifies a number of formative aspects of cultural identity, each one of which also represents a mechanism by which organizational culture might be built and directed towards purposive ends.
