convergence will bring together quantum physics, computer sciences and biogenetics. Though all three may very well bring great advances, it has to be thought that, as Newton so aptly put it, there will be an opposite reaction. Of these three areas that Kaku discusses, the biogenetic fields yields the most potential for hotly debated ethics, morals and potentials. PRO What is most spooky about chapter twelve in his book, called: Second Thoughts: Genetics of a Brave New World, is that some of the elements of Huxleys Brave New World are being seen already. One of the potentials that Kaku puts forth is that biogenetics will have come so far as to be able to grow spare body parts for those which become damaged in the human being. Of course the advantage is grasped immediately. Whole legs could be reattached; no one need ever suffer from a deformed body any longer. Whole organs could be replaced without worrying about the waiting list or the constant rejection by the host. In addition, stem cell research has the very real and immediate prospect of producing more specialized cells or tissue to treat injuries or diseases such as Alzheimers disease, Parkinson s disease, and heart disease. However, the early results are promising for the new research that could be done. Scientists are stating that it is now possible to grow tissues that will not trigger the rejection phase that is possible with a transplant. This works, one has to think, because stem cells are the basic building blocks of all human cells. They grow vigorously in the body, especially in human embryos and fetuses, and, like chameleons, can be persuaded to switch functions. A stem cell can serve as a fat cell, for example, and then convert to service as a bone ...
