A deadly disease caused either by a bacterial or viral form can cause a person to succumb to the disease in as little as a few days. With children, the
disease hits quicker, harder, and is more difficult to initially diagnose. Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and can be life threatening.
Though many do recover from the disease it can be said that they do suffer long lasting ill effects from the disease, such as blindness, or hearing loss(MedInfo, 2002). Whereas
it can take a day or two to manifest symptoms in an adult, within the smaller host body of a child, this disease can develop quickly, in the matter of
hours. The other problem, it can be assumed, is that diagnosis of meningitis may be delayed in children because so many other childhood illnesses initially exhibit the same symptoms.
In very small children, Medinfo states that, meningitis can cause fever, vomiting, refusal to feed, constant crying, severe headache, stiff neck, and aversion to bright lights, extreme drowsiness or
loss of consciousness(Medinfo, 2002). It is understandable, though not excusable, as to how a physician may misinterpret the symptoms of meningitis, especially in children. It is said that when septicaemia
sets in (which is actually blood poisoning) that a rash, not unlike that, that one might get from an acute case of poison ivy or perhaps chicken pox is evident.
Later, however, the red spots turn purple and do not fade when touched(MedInfo, 2002). In babies, the soft spot on their head may begin to bulge, there also may be
