The opening verses demonstrate that Joseph was a law-abiding citizen, taking a very pregnant Mary on a long journey to comply with the census mandate. The Messiah was to be born from the House of David (see Micah 5:2). The very first verses establish that Joseph is of that lineage so, Jesus heritage is demonstrated. Luke makes the lineage very clear in verse 4 when he reports that Joseph and Mary were living in Nazareth and they traveled to Bethlehem to register in the census. The mention of the census fixes the date of Christs birth (Evans, 1990). First, we read that Caesar Augustus was ruler but it goes further by telling us that it was the first census during Quirinius tenure as the Syrian governor (Evans, 1990; Marshall, DATE). As Evans (1990) explained, the Messiahs birth and, hence, the beginning of Christianity is linked directly to an important date and event in history. There is significant debate about this date (Evans, 1990; Marshall, DATE) but that is too long a discussion for this essay. The fact that Luke reports these same events in Acts 5:37 suggests that Luke did write this text himself and he did associate the birth of Jesus with a secular historical event. These debates have continued over centuries with no resolution. Christ was born during Herods reign but Quirinius did not become governor until after Herods death somewhere between 6 and 9 A.D. (Marshall, DATE). Works from Josephus, a Roman historian, validate the census that was required at the time and that also suggest this was the first census (Marshall, DATE).
