Parental involvement can include parents being active in the community on behalf of education, but for the purposes here it is limited to applicability to a specific student. In this sense parental involvement ranges from asking how the school day was to checking homework to maintaining communication with the childs teacher. There are limitations, however. Limitations Discussing social research in general terms, Trochim (2006) states, "We will openly acknowledge our limitations and recognize that what we learn from a single evaluation study, however well designed, will almost always be equivocal and tentative." This is especially true in action research based in education. Review of published literature and conventional wisdom indicate that motivation varies according not only to individual students situations but also in terms of the academic environments of students schools, parental involvement in their childrens education and students overall intrinsic motivation. Results gained from this study apply to the students surveyed, but likely will not be generalizable to a broader population. Because every classroom, every school and every community differs, it will not be possible to recreate exact conditions outside of the classes used in the study. Further, the study will not address gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status. The smallest group unit will be defined at the classroom level, which by its nature (and by law) contains students from various ethnic and socioeconomic strata. The only student-specific characteristic that will be used as a variable is the presence of one or more diagnosed learning disabilities.
