was a man who struggled for civil rights as he recognized that African Americans were still oppressed and denied basic rights despite the fact that the Civil War and the freeing of African American slaves had taken place in the previous century. Through his work and his words people became more aware of the problems, and many became involved in ensuring the freedoms of the African American people, freedoms that had long been denied. The following paper examines the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. and then examines the relevance of his life and work in relationship to the election of Barack Obama as the President of the United States. Life and Times of Martin Luther King Jr. "Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin" (Nobelprize.org, 2009). He was essentially born into a family of pastors with his grandfather acting as the pastor of "the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931" and then "his father...served from then" on with Martin Luther King Jr. also becoming a co-pastor (Nobelprize.org, 2009). Young Martin was educated in schools in Georgia that were segregated (Nobelprize.org, 2009). He graduated high school when he was 15 and then went on to receive his B.A. from Morehouse College in 1948 (Nobelprize.org, 2009). This particular college was apparently a very distinguished institution for the higher education of African Americans and his father and grandfather had also graduated from this college (Nobelprize.org, 2009).
