I have been a member of this community for more than a decade and have first hand experience with the increasing rate of crime in the downtown area. Ive also noticed that the average age of criminals has decreased significantly in recent years and crime rates in the afternoons and early evenings appear to be on the rise. I believe that its time for the city to take productive, preventative measures to reduce the level of crime committed by some of our most vulnerable citizens. I believe that the increased rates of petty crimes committed by juveniles is related to the fact that many of these children are unsupervised and do not have structured activities after school. National crime statistics blame rising youth participation in gangs and violent crimes with a nationwide crime spike (Associated Press, 2007). Crime prevention strategies often consider the fact that youth crimes are most likely to be committed between 2 and 8 p.m. and youth crime rates peak around 3 p.m. (Einstein Law, 2008). Prevention efforts must look at ways to address the unsupervised youth population and create positive programming that can move this population off the streets. Recreation centers have been a part of a national trend, first started with the Boys Club organizations in the first half of the 20th century. Recognizing that urban crime and delinquency were linked, these organizations formed in an effort to find other outlets for these youths. Recreation centers can offer a variety of programs, from sports to entertainment, which can help children make better choices.
