20th century presidents have had lasting and significant influence over the current economic structure and position of the country. Four of those are Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Practically no one is lukewarm toward the 32nd president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945). Many admire his tireless efforts to pull the nation out of the darkness of the Great Depression; others loathe his manipulation of existing systems and the press to accomplish his goals for the country. Elected in 1932, he took office in March 1933 when the number of unemployed stood at 13,000,000 and after most of the nations banks had closed. Famous for his New Deal and for his response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, FDR blazed trails that no one had anticipated. He instituted the federal income tax, welfare relief and Social Security, and sought to put the unemployed back to work by creating thousands of federal jobs. He removed the United States from the gold standard, an action that was tested and discussed - but upheld - in the Supreme Court. In the second of what would become fairly regular Fireside Chats, FDR (1933) went directly to the American people via radio to outline what he referred to as the "New Deal." It was in this address that FDR (1933) announced the jobs program that would entail "feeding, clothing and caring for nearly twice as many men as we have in the regular army itself" (Roosevelt 1933), along with the development of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) that would create a network of lakes and extensive flood control in Tennessee, Georgia ...
