In one particular esperpentos, "Las Luces de Bohemia" we are given a story that is very typical of his genre as it involves the satire and the absurd. In the following paper we examine some of the various aspects of the play in relationship to the final scene. Relevance to the Play Valle-Inclans play was "Written in the early 1920s" and "is set in the twilight phase of Madrids bohemian artistic life against the turbulent social and political background of events between 1900 and 1920. The plays protagonist, the poet Max Estrella, confronts the dilemma between art and social commitment and the problem of salvaging some sort of authenticity and identity in a context which converts him into an anachronism" (Anonymous Ram?n Mar?a del Valle-Incl?n (1866?1936): Lights of Bohemia (Luces de Bohemia), 2002; Lights.html). It is a play in which "Valle-Incl?n tries to convey the tragi-grotesque contradictions of his contemporary surroundings by the use of similarly contrasting registers in his theatr" (Anonymous Ram?n Mar?a del Valle-Incl?n (1866?1936): Lights of Bohemia (Luces de Bohemia), 2002; Lights.html). Bearing these realities in mind we find that the final scene presents us with something of the uselessness of Maxs endeavors. Valle-Inclan obviously was one who felt that there was a very absurd quality to life, an absurdity that went against any explanation, and that is where the primary relevance of the final scene lies. The student should examine the final scene in that respect and look for the switches and clues that truly illustrate the futility of much of the involvement in the play.
