Eighners essay reveals that his elegant prose style turns his life as a homeless person into fascinating reading, which provides profound moral lessons. Eighner relates a great deal of personal experience, as he indicates that his Dumpster diving career began while he and his dog Lisbeth were living in Austin. At this point, Eighner was still living in a house, and all of his income had to go to pay the rent, so he used Dumpster diving to provide the necessities of life, everything from food to clothing, bedding and toilet paper. It seems incredible that Eighner could find the necessities of life in the trash that other people have discarded, but his detailed description of his methods and preferences provides a vivid picture that indicates how he accomplished this feat. For example, he describes how he evaluates whether or not something is safe to eat, and presents a rationale that is logical and practical. However, he also admits that, despite his criteria, he experienced dysentery, on average, around once a month. Nevertheless, Eighner creates a persuasive argument that "a lot of perfectly good food can be found in Dumpsters" (Eighner). There are also descriptions in Eighners article that give the reader a sense of place, that is, his descriptions help the reader visualize the Dumpster environment. He describes the best method for entering the Dumpster, and advises on hazards, such as finding "kitty" or "birdie" surprise, i.e., bags of discarded kitty litter or bird feces. Hazards also include bees and fire ants, which are "vicious and aggressive" (Eighner). Fire ants are easily picked up by brushing against a surface in the Dumpster.
