"move on up" to another neighborhood and the story of a white, middle-class family that struggles to live the American Dream and ends up failing miserably. Nor, on the surface, does there seem to be any similarities between the authors of the above-mentioned stories; white playwright Arthur Miller wrote Death of a Salesman (about the middle-class white family) when he was a fairly established writer; while Raisin in the Sun, concerning the poverty-stricken black family, was the first play by Lorraine Hansberry, a young black female playwright. Even the release dates of the plays were different: Death of A Salesman premiered in 1949, whereas Raisin in the Sun made its debut in 1959. Although these two plays are as different as literally black and white, they share some things in common. Both have protagonists who are undergoing their own pain and who, as a result, are dragging their families into the same abyss of discomfort and outright despair. Death of a Salesmans Willy Loman wants his sons to succeed to justify his own existence and well being (so they, and he, can have realized the American Dream), and they fail miserably. Raisin in the Sun, in the meantime, boasts Walter Younger who, in his own quest to find his own American Dream, squanders an inheritance on a one-shot deal that goes bad. And in the old adage that behind every may lies a great woman, Walter and Willy are very lucky. Walter Younger has his wife, Ruth; while Willy Loman has Linda Loman. One is black and one is white, but both share the endearing (and some might say outmoded) characteristic of supporting their men and their families, no matter how dense they may be behaving. ...
