Differences have been noted also in the patterns of participation and enrollment, including the levels of mathematics programming available to both girls and boys. Correlations, then, have been made between social psychology, developmental perspectives, and assessments of gender stereotypes that influence variations in mathematics instruction. Adams (1998), in the article Pulling the Plug on Gender-Related Differences in Mathematics considers some of the underlying reasons for gender differences in mathematics. Adams notes that gender-related differences in mathematics instruction and educational design have been a major concern of educators since the 1980s (Adams, 1998). Further, different patterns of participation have been noted, including the fact that males enroll in mathematics classes more than females, males seek out more advanced mathematics instruction than females (Adams, 1998). Why is this a concern and why have developmental and cognitive psychological elements been applied to an understanding of this problem? Because it has been recognized that a lack of mathematics instruction restricts a persons preparedness for post-secondary education (Adams, 1998). Further, mathematics preparedness impacts an individuals choice of career, and inadequate preparation can negatively influence a persons choice of careers in either science or mathematics (Adams, 1998). As a result, these fields are dominated by men (Adams, 1998). Developmental psychologists like Lawrence Kohlberg have recognized that cultural and social expectations play a major role in influencing the learning environment, and can further impact the way in which individuals perceive themselves relative to particular subjects.
