authors have taken up some aspect of this theme as well: this paper will examine A Sincere Friendship by Clarice Lispector, The Lion by Eugeny Zamyatin, The Night Visitor by
Elena Poniatowska, and China by Charles Johnson, and look at the way these authors have illustrated the way the human need for individual expression and moral courage influence and reinforce
each other. The Kiss of the Spider Woman is set in a South American prison in which Molina and Valentin are incarcerated. Molina is a homosexual, a sweet, sensitive soul,
and he manages to make his term in prison endurable by telling his cellmate about movies he has seen and loved -- even acting out the female parts of the
films. His current cellmate, Valentin, is a hardened journalist who is in prison for helping members of the underground. His life has been composed of roughness and hardship, and he
has no time for romance, movies, and certainly not for the acting-out of a flamboyant gay such as Molina. This prison setting is in many ways very reminiscent of
the government offices depicted in Elena Poniatowska?s The Night Visitor. In Poniatowska?s story as well, the author is striving for a contrast between the soul-killing regime of the government officials
and the liberating force of the individual soul. In Poniatowska?s case, her Esmeralda is pitted against the bureaucratic authority of the Court Minister, who sees her free expression of her
