Lears World Lear is a pitiful figure, but it can be hard to sympathize with him, because his terrible problems are of his own making; he is the one
who sets the disaster in motion. He is, in essence, a man of no real understanding, easily deceived by surface appearances. He also seems to have no true
grasp of what it is to be a king: kings rule for life; one cannot simply take off the crown and say "Ive had enough!" (Well, actually he
says he intends to "shake all cares and business from our age, Conferring them on younger strengths, while we Unburthend crawl toward death" (Act I, sc. 1, 39-41)). But
thats what he means; hes going to let someone else take over while he waits to die. This is hardly a noble quality, nor does it demonstrate leadership or
kingship. One of the most intriguing things about Lears world is that its hyper-masculine. We never find out what happened to the queen; shes barely mentioned. Had she been
there, she might have added a dose of common sense to the proceedings, and pointed out to her husband that dividing the kingdom among his three daughters was going to
cause no end of trouble. But shes not there and there is no "softer" presence to mitigate against what is a truly stupid decision. Lears daughters are the only women
in the play, and Id argue that two of them are more masculine than feminine. Not that they are attracted to women, but that they embody those characteristics we
